The Publications Division of the Prime Ministers Museum and Library (erstwhile Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML)), has been a key instrument in advancing and disseminating scholarly research on modern and contemporary Indian history, society, politics, and culture. The Division began its publishing programme in December 1971 with Socialism in India, marking PMML’s entry into institutional publishing. During the 1970s, it produced several important works based on lectures delivered at PMML, including Studies in Modern Indian History, Sri Aurobindo—An Interpretation, Bengal Famine of 1943: The American Response, and edited volumes on Rammohan Roy, Indian foreign policy during the Nehru years, women’s history, and science and technology. These publications reflected PMML’s commitment to critical historical inquiry and contemporary relevance, as well as its effort to reach wider audiences.
From the early 1980s, the Publications Division became closely integrated with PMML’s expanding research agenda. Major research programmes on Jawaharlal Nehru, modern Indian history, and contemporary studies generated a steady stream of scholarly outputs. A significant milestone was the launch of the Selected Works of Motilal Nehru, a multi-volume project that substantially enriched primary source material for historians of Indian nationalism.
The introduction of the Occasional Papers series in the financial year 1982-83 further strengthened PMML’s academic outreach by providing a forum for innovative and interdisciplinary research. Contributions by leading historians and social scientists addressed themes such as nationalism, communalism, labour, gender, democracy, social movements, and political economy.
Currently Publications Division publishes the occasional paper in four broad categories i.e., History and Society, Perspectives in Indian Development, International Relations and समाज और इतिहास in Hindi.
