Planetarium

The Planetarium is designed to promote and present many facets of astronomy, astrophysics, and the celestial science. Over the years it has played a seminal role in disseminating knowledge and instilling interest in space science, especially among young minds. Laced with special effects and stunning visuals, the 2D shows being run in the sky theatre have made the Planetarium a popular destination for all. The Planetarium has now upgraded the earlier installed 2D Projection System to a more sophisticated and state-of-the-art 3D Projection System which will give users a visually enhanced and immersive experience. It runs 7 shows in a day in both 2D and 3D technology. The Aryabhata Gallery is a landmark recent addition to the Planetarium. It traces India’s astronomical legacy, from ancient scholars like Aryabhata to the nation’s modern space milestones achieved by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Through immersive storytelling, interactive digital installations, and exhibits on astrophysics and space science, the gallery aims to ignite scientific curiosity, nurture critical thinking, and instil pride among visitors, especially the youth. The strength of the Planetarium lies in its live interactions and innovative programmes which are being constantly improvised, over the years for visitors, students, amateur astronomers and astronomy enthusiasts. Lectures, workshops and observational activities in the field of astronomy, space science, environment etc. for school & college students and astronomy enthusiasts are organized throughout the year thereby giving the general public and students the opportunity to interact with subject experts. About

Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi, is a premier centre for astronomy education and public engagement, dedicated to nurturing scientific temper and curiosity about the universe. Since its inauguration on 6 February 1984, the Planetarium has been inspiring generations through immersive sky-theatre experiences, transforming the learning of astronomy into a fascinating and enjoyable journey. With its iconic full-dome theatre, the Planetarium brings the cosmos alive through high-quality 4K, 15-metre dome, 2D and 3D digital shows that vividly communicate complex scientific ideas in an accessible and captivating manner for visitors of all ages. Over the years, the Planetarium has evolved into a vibrant hub for the scientific study of astronomy and a meeting ground for scientists, scholars, educators, and students. It regularly hosts lectures, discussions, workshops, teacher training programmes, and outreach activities focused on stellar and astronomical phenomena. Monthly stargazing programmes and astronomical viewing sessions are organised for major celestial events such as solar and lunar eclipses, meteor showers, and planetary conjunctions, with telescopes installed for public viewing and photography, enabling visitors to experience the wonders of the night sky firsthand. A major highlight of the Planetarium is the Aryabhata Gallery. The gallery was further upgraded and re-inaugurated on 23 August 2025 by Group Captain Shubhashu Shukla, India’s first astronaut to dock at the International Space Station (ISS). It showcases India’s rich astronomical heritage alongside the nation’s remarkable achievements in modern space science and exploration. The gallery presents an engaging narrative of India’s journey from ancient astronomical traditions to contemporary space missions through interactive exhibits, digital installations, and immersive storytelling. The Aryabhata Gallery also showcases the Soyuz T-10 descent module, in which Rakesh Sharma returned to Earth after becoming the first Indian to travel to space on 3 April 1984, along with the original space suit of Cosmonaut Wing Commander Ravish Malhotra. The Planetarium also actively encourages young minds through creative and competitive programmes such as science and astronomy quizzes, astro-painting, and many more. These initiatives aim to spark curiosity, creativity, and a spirit of exploration among students, helping them connect science with imagination and real-world exploration. Through continuous innovation in technology, content, and outreach, Nehru Planetarium remains committed to making astronomy accessible, inspiring, and meaningful for all. As a bridge between science and society, it continues to play a vital role in popularising astronomy, astrophysics, and space science, fostering a lifelong sense of wonder about the universe.
