About

The Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi, is a premier centre for astronomy education and public engagement, dedicated to nurturing scientific temper and curiosity about the universe. Inaugurated on 6 February 1984, the Planetarium has played a significant role in popularising astronomy through immersive and engaging learning experiences for visitors of all ages. At the core of the Planetarium is its full-dome sky theatre, equipped with a 15-metre 4K digital dome capable of presenting high-quality 2D and 3D shows. These programmes communicate complex astronomical concepts in an accessible and visually captivating manner, making the exploration of the cosmos both educational and enjoyable. Over the years, the Planetarium has evolved into a vibrant hub for astronomy-related academic and outreach activities. It regularly organises lectures, workshops, teacher training programmes, and discussions involving scientists, educators, scholars, and students. Monthly stargazing sessions and special observational programmes are conducted for major celestial events such as solar and lunar eclipses, meteor showers, and planetary conjunctions, with telescopes installed for public viewing and photography. A major attraction of the Planetarium is the Aryabhata Gallery, which showcases India’s rich astronomical heritage alongside its achievements in modern space science. The gallery was upgraded and re-inaugurated on 23 August 2025 by Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, India’s first astronaut to dock at the International Space Station. It presents India’s journey from ancient astronomical traditions to contemporary space missions through interactive exhibits and digital installations. Key exhibits include the Soyuz T-10 descent module used by Cosmonaut Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma on his return to Earth in April 1984 and the original space suit of Cosmonaut Wing Commander Ravish Malhotra. The Nehru Planetarium also actively engages young audiences through educational and creative programmes such as astronomy quizzes, astro-painting, and other student-oriented initiatives aimed at fostering curiosity, creativity, and a spirit of scientific inquiry. Through continuous innovation in content, technology, and outreach, the Nehru Planetarium continues to serve as a bridge between science and society, inspiring a deeper understanding of astronomy, astrophysics, and space science. Ticketing for Nehru Planetarium shows is available through the BookMyShow platform. Information on show schedules, languages, formats, and ticket fares is provided on the booking interface.
